Western Muslims hold conference to voice reforms within House of Islam

WASHINGTON - Western Muslims hoping to counter the influence of Islamist ideology are gathering in the D.C. area Friday.

The group is meeting to share findings from a recent reform summit held to address the root causes of Islamist terrorism.

The "Summit for Western Muslim Voices for Reform against the Islamic State and Islamism," conference is the first of its kind and will include over 20 Western Muslim reformers.

This meeting follows a deadly terror attack in Paris and comes just days after a mass shooting in California.

"The time for condemnations, and just simply press releases, against acts of terror is over," Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser told FOX 5’s Bob Barnard at the National Press Club Friday.

"There's a root cause. We're going to put out a declaration today, hand it to everybody, and say this is the litmus test. If Muslims can say they're against all violent Jihads, against the Islamic State concept, against the caliphate, for equality in men and women, for peace for secular governance -- these are things that either can modernize or moderate Muslims," he continued. "If they don't agree with them, they become radicalized and are part of the problem."

"I think it's time for Muslims and Americans to see that we're part of the solution - and that will do just unbelievable benefit to melt away some of the bigotry that exists towards Muslims to realize we're part of the solution," Jasser said.

Dr. M. Zuhdi Jasser told FOX 5’s Bob Barnard at the National Press Club Friday.

Dr Jasser is a good guy. Real patriotic American, who just happens to be Muslim. If I'm not mistaken, I believe he served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

These Muslims are just as much "infidels" to ISIS, which practices the literal teachings of Muhammad, as are a western citizen or country.

I live next to a Mormom family.  One of their Mormon friends comes over to my house to have a few beers with me once in a while to watch a game.  Our devout neighbors somewhat jokingly refer to him as a "jack" Mormom because of it.

The difference is that while they may view his faith differently than theirs, they aren't trying to either convert him or kill him.

Unfortunately these guys are not unlike the Nazi opposition in Germany during WWII. Few and far between, and must either flee or be killed the second they stick their head up.

Lots of bombs and troops are needed to end this conflict. But, so too is reform within Islam needed. I'm not hopeful we will witness the latter.

How do you reform Islam without rewriting the Koran?  ISIS and its followers are merely doing exactly what that book tells them to do with those that won't convert.

Exactly. Houston – we've got a big, big problem.

I'm not sure we can get bipartisan agreement on how to respond. At this point, if Democrats continue to drag their feet then they are just as dangerous to America as is ISIS!

Quite frankly, these people are generally viewed by the islamic faithful as apostates and worthy of execution.

muhammed's writings and laws are regarded by the faithful as immutable and unchangeable.
