I don't see much of a difference between the mortgage interest deduction and special tax breaks handed out for other reasons. There is no earthly reason that is even mildly rational that would justify the deduction for home mortgage interest.
Not many years ago, all kinds of interest were deductible, not just home mortgage interest.
The logic of favorable treatment of home ownership costs through the tax codes, was a stimulus to our economy. It was and is felt that is a useful means of building communities, families, etc. And it provides a lot of jobs.
If we are going to strip our tax codes to the bare bone, no special treatments of any kind for anything, lower rates, I could live with that.
But too often a good idea when actually implemented turns out differently.
For instance I think voters will punish Cruz and Paul, for the reckless opposition to gathering intelligence on terrorism by all means possible. It is an idea which in theory, in peacetime has appeal. But in today's real world it stinks.
Removing the tax incentive from home ownership, could reduce demand, and hurt the economy.
