SAN DIEGO – A man armed with what authorities say could be a long-range rifle allegedly fired gunshots in the Bankers Hill neighborhood of San Diego Wednesday morning, prompting a standoff with police.

San Diego police were responding to a domestic violence call sometime before 10 a.m. when the gunman started firing at them while they were in his apartment in the 2400 block of Brant St.. According to Lt. Scott Wahl, the shots came within inches of hitting the officers.

"The rounds nearly missed the officers," Wahl said.

A witness told 10News he heard at least two gunshots. 10News reporters at the scene later heard several more and were told to take cover.

"We've been hearing gunfire out here, the entire time we've been here," Wahl said.

The suspect was holed up in an apartment as of 11:50 a.m. There were no reported injuries and no indication he had any hostages. Authorities had the building surrounded with a full SWAT presence and shut down nearby roads. Curlew, Brant, Albatross, and Front streets were closed between Laurel Street and West Ivy Street.

"What we're hoping is that the suspect is going to surrender peacefully... we've got him safely contained, safely isolated," Wahl said.

Washington Elementary School and City Tree Christian were on lockdown as of 11 a.m. People were being asked to avoid the area and shelter in place.
