A helicopter crash west of the Libyan capital Tripoli has killed at least 12 people, according to a security source as cited by Reuters. It is unknown what caused the accident and if any gunfire had been involved.
The helicopter had been bringing money to a local bank on its inward journey. However, the helicopter ran into trouble on return back to Tripoli and was carrying a number of local residents, Reuters reports.
Local media reports say that there were high-ranking militia forces traveling in the helicopter, while there were also some staff from the bank on board.
Meanwhile, the IBTimes UK says that 14 people have been killed, citing a source in the Libyan government. The source added that the helicopter crashed into the Mediterranean Sea not far from the Al-Maya region. Local reports say that 10 people were believed to have drowned, while four bodies have been pulled from the sea.
