U.S. special operations troops were involved in an attempt to rescue Kurdish hostages overnight in Iraq, U.S. officials told CNN on condition of anonymity Thursday.

Initial reports indicate a U.S. service member may have been injured or killed in the attempt, the officials said without elaborating.
