All reports are pretty consistant.

They're showboating their tech capabilities.

It just seemed odd for two reasons:

1. The Caspian isn't the closest, I would have figured from naval ships near their naval base *in* Syria.

2. I'm a bit surprised they have cruise missile capable naval vessels on the Caspian, considering that it's landlocked.

But then,  Russia isn't my specialty.

Cruise missiles don't NEED huge hulls to cart them around, do they? I suppose it's a cheap enough way of projecting power at the various 'stans across the sea from them without devoting too many personnel.

For one or two missiles, no.  But think of 10-20 missile tubes... and then space for reloads.  Not to mention the equipment or system needed to actually reload them into the tubes.

Russian cruiser (I don't know the class, but it is from 2013 and is probably used mainly for cruise missile launchers).

That one is a Slava class

I got curious and looked up what we know they have in the Caspian.

They've got a bunch of Corvettes - 4 to 6 tubes per hull and it doesn't look like a lot of room for reloads. Must have pretty much shot them dry just to do that salvo, if 21 missiles is in fact accurate.

It looks like 2 on each side.  But yeah, they'll have to head back into port for reloads.  And they emptied 6 ships for that launch.
