NEW YORK (Oct. 2, 2015) — That plan to buy your honey new printer cartridges for Christmas this year just got a little harder.

Office supply retailer Staples says its stores will be closed on Thanksgiving.

“We want our customers and associates to enjoy Thanksgiving their own way,” Demos Parneros, president of the company’s North American stores and online, said in a statement.

Staples said its 2015 holiday deals will be available in stores beginning 6 a.m. on Black Friday.

Historically, Black Friday is one of the biggest days of the year for retailers, but it’s no longer a one-day event.

In addition to Staples, other stores with Thanksgiving hours last year included Best Buy, Toys R Us, Target and Radio Shack.

But Thanksgiving openings have been controversial. Some shoppers rebelled because, well, it’s Thanksgiving. And many workers would rather spend the day with family and friends.

It’s not also clear that opening on Thanksgiving helped boost overall Black Friday weekend sales. Some shoppers who turned out on Thursday simply then skipped a day later in the weekend.

Steve Kelley (from WTXF/Philadelphia) notes on his official Facebook:

Staples instead is going back to the future with an old fashioned early 6am Black Friday opening in stores but having special online sales on Thanksgiving Day for people shopping online instead of watching football. We will see if other big retailers follow but don't count on it. Despite so much criticism of putting profit over people retailers have been increasing Thanksgiving Day openings and hours. Kmart was first and last year in Northeast Philly we were outside one with less than 10 people in line just before opening. Our local viewers there began showing up after seeing the no crowd look on tv and available specials STILL available. The store made special tickets for the limited number of big doorbuster deals and expected to hand them all out in a long line, but mgrs were still holding most long after the store opened.

Consider me very pleasantly surprised.

People still care about Thanksgiving as a day of rest and gratitude—and used the free market to express themselves. I would have sworn that America's consumerist culture and desperate need to seek the best deal would have ensured that Thanksgiving super sales would become the new norm. We'll see if others follow Staples' lead.

You may recall Macy's (ironically) was the one who really pushed the whole Thanksgiving sale movement, and they're hurting particularly badly this year. This year ought to be interesting.

Not to seem cynical, but who buys stuff at Staples for Christmas anyway?
Well, George Lewis told the Englishman, the Italian and the Jew
You can't open your mind, boys, to every conceivable point of view

...Bob Dylan

Electronics are the biggest category of Thanksgiving weekend sales. Staples sells a lot of them.
