House GOP to huddle Tuesday to plot future

By Cristina Marcos

House Republicans will meet behind closed doors Tuesday evening to discuss their leadership options in the wake of Speaker John Boehner's (R-Ohio) resignation.

The notice for the 5 p.m. meeting in the Capitol basement says the Republican Conference will “discuss the strategy moving forward."

Rep. Peter Roskam (R-Ill.), a former chief deputy whip who is mulling a run for majority leader, sent a letter to GOP colleagues over the weekend calling for a special, extra-long meeting to have an "open dialogue."

“Before we rush headlong into leadership elections, we need to take time to reflect on what has happened and have a serious discussion about why we're here serving, what we expect of our leaders, and how we plan to accomplish our goals,” he wrote in a letter to House GOP Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.), who herself is also angling for majority leader.

A spokesman for McMorris Rodgers told The Hill over the weekend that she had already planned to schedule a conference meeting to discuss the next steps.

House Republicans have not yet announced when the leadership elections will take place. Boehner will step down from Congress on Oct. 30.

Aside from Roskam and McMorris Rodgers, House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-La.) and House Budget Committee Chairman Tom Price (R-Ga.) are also gearing up to run for the majority leader slot.

The current majority leader, Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.), is considered the odds-on favorite to succeed Boehner as Speaker.
