Cody Full, a former roommate and platoon member who was serving with Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl when he disappeared in Afghanistan, said Friday that he wishes the soldier would take the stand and "tell the truth" about why he had left his unit.

"If Bergdahl does get summoned, I hope, he will be under oath," Full told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" co-host Martha MacCallum. "So I hope he tells the truth because perjury would not be another thing to add to all the charges he faces. I hope today if he does get called to the stand when he decides to finally tell the truth."

And if he does that, said Full, he hopes he "looks our fellow commander and other soldiers in the courtroom in they eye. That is the least he can do for everything he has done already."

Bergdahl was not expected to testify in his own behalf in proceedings being held at Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston in Texas, where attorneys are arguing on whether he should face court-martial proceedings over his disappearance, reports CNN.

Full pointed out that prosecutors brought out evidence on Thursday that Bergdahl had told his girlfriend and family members that he planned to desert, and that he'd mailed his belongings home, even though their platoon still had nine months left in their deployment.

"We were leaving but we were only leaving that certain area of operations," said Full. "We weren't leaving Afghanistan. He would still be in Afghanistan for another nine months."

Full said he is glad that Bergdahl was brought back to the United States, because he is a fellow American, but "he has to face the consequences for his actions."

Others in the military make mistakes, said Full, and are punished for them, and Bergdahl "didn't serve honorably overseas."

Article 31 of the U.C.M.J. is essentially the same as the 5th Amendment to the US Constitution.

Can't compel somebody to testify against themselves.
