House Oversight Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz Tuesday subpoenaed all the unedited footage on Planned Parenthood from the Center for Medical Progress (CMS) in its investigation of the organization's sale of fetal body parts.
"Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation want to hide their activities from the American people," the Utah Republican said. "This subpoena is a demand for transparency."
The federation sued CMS in July to prevent it from releasing further videos on Planned Parenthood's activities.
Chaffetz's subpoena came as the Los Angeles-based anti-abortion group released its 10th undercover video, in which Planned Parenthood officials discuss selling eyes and other "fresh" body parts and raise publicity and legal concerns should their activities become known.
The House panel is expected to hold a hearing on whether to strip Planned Parenthood of its funding later this month, Chaffetz said.
"The action of the court will not thwart or impede Congress' constitutional duty and right to conduct effective oversight," he said.
In addition, Republican presidential candidate Rand Paul said Tuesday that he did not think it should take 60 votes to defund Planned Parenthood, but rather 60 votes to keep it funded.
"When the money runs out, it should take 60 votes to fund anything, and not only Planned Parenthood but a thousand different items should all have restrictions and have instructions on how the money's spent," the Kentucky senator told "The Lead with Jake Tapper."
"Every regulation that president Obama has passed without congressional authority should be either funded or not funded by Congress and affirmatively take 60 votes."
Thus, it would be Democrats, and not Republicans, who would be shutting down the government, he said.
