Iran says finds unexpectedly high uranium reserve
Reuters

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran has discovered an unexpectedly high reserve of uranium and will soon begin extracting the radioactive element at a new mine, the head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organisation said on Saturday.

The comments cast doubt on previous assessments from some Western analysts who said the country had a low supply and would sooner or later would need to import uranium, the raw material needed for its nuclear program.

Any indication Iran could become more self-sufficient will be closely watched by world powers, which reached a landmark deal with Tehran in July over its program. They had feared the nuclear activities were aimed at acquiring the capability to produce atomic weapons - something denied by Tehran.

"I cannot announce (the level of) Iran's uranium mine reserves. The important thing is that before aerial prospecting for uranium ores we were not too optimistic, but the new discoveries have made us confident about our reserves," Iranian nuclear chief Ali Akbar Salehi was quoted as saying by state news agency IRNA.

Salehi said uranium exploration had covered almost two-thirds of Iran and would be complete in the next four years.

Uranium can be used for civilian power production and scientific purposes, but is also a key ingredient in nuclear weapons.

The July deal between Iran and world powers will lift international sanctions on Iran in exchange for at least a decade of curbs on the country's nuclear activity.

After decades of efforts, Iran - which has consistently said its program is for peaceful purposes - has achieved a full nuclear fuel cycle, ranging from the extraction of uranium ore to enrichment and production of fuel rods for nuclear reactors.

Sanctions on companies taking part in Iran's uranium mining industry will be lifted when the agreement is implemented.

Salehi said uranium extraction was set to begin at a new mine in the central province of Yazd, according to IRNA.

Some Western analysts have previously said that Iran was close to exhausting its supply of yellowcake - or raw uranium - and that mining it domestically was not cost-efficient.

A report published in 2013 by U.S. think-tanks Carnegie Endowment and the Federation of American Scientists said the scarcity and low quality of Iran's uranium resources compelled it "to rely on external sources of natural and processed uranium".

It added: "Despite the Iranian leadership's assertions to the contrary, Iran's estimated uranium endowments are nowhere near sufficient to supply its planned nuclear program."

Iran has repeatedly denied overseas media reports that it has tried to import uranium from countries like Kazakhstan and Zimbabwe.

What an amazing coincidence!  The U.S. gives Iran everything they want to develop a nuclear plan and then "find" a rich reserve of uranium!  What are the odds? 888sunglass

They already know the path; what they'll unexpectedly find next is that they already have a nuke.

Get a grip, people.

Uranium in it's natural state is completely useless for power/weapon production.  It has to be 'enriched'.  That is a process in which the raw ore is sifted through to seperate U-235 from the base U-238.

That happens in centrifuges.

And you need a *lot* of them to do it.  And time, too.

And if the treaty is implemented, Iran will go from 20,000+ to just 6,000 centrifuges, making it much more difficult and time consuming to get the uranium up to the weapons grade needed.

Is this tongue-in-cheek?

If it's not, you obviously believe Iran will actually reduce the number of centrifuges it has spinning.  Since Iran can basically monitor and report its own activity to the IAEA, we will never know just what its doing.

The Iran deal looks to be even more of a sucker's play.

Think about it.  How did we find out they had a nuclear program in the first place?  If they don't scale down, we're going to notice that nothing has changed.

Totally missed the point.

We will know if they do/do not.  And the sanctions return if they do not.

Furthermore, as condition for the release of the $150 billion and normalized trade, they have to dilute their HEU down to LEU (I think it was to 5% enriched, ie: standard enrichment for nuclear power plants) as well as scrap their centrifuges.

So even if they decide to scrap the agreement immediately afterwards, we have still pushed back their bomb making timeline compared to where they are right now.

On the other hand, they do have $150 billion and normalized trade... that the can use to for conventional weapons and support to their proxy forces throughout the middle east.

The Iranian buildup of conventional weapons and support of their proxy forces is the immediate threat to Israel.   US and Israeli representatives are currently negotiating upgrades and increases in US support for the Israeli conventional arsenal.  Rumor has it this agreement will be announced when Obama meets Netanyahu in Washington in November.

Yep.

Fortunately (is that even the right word here?), ISIS is actually worrying Iran.  They are using up their Hezballah proxies in the fight.  And it's costing them a sizable chunk of money to keep them equipped with the weapons they need to fight.  For they aren't just getting rockets like they used to.  It's the full kit needed to fight a ground war that Iran is paying for.

Not to mention the cost of having their own forces (direct, not proxy) in Iraq itself... fighting ISIS.

Not to mention the costs of Yemen...

No I haven't missed the point. They will NEVER scale down. The destruction of USA and Israel is part of their religion. The Twelve Imams. China has already sold them 10 or so new fighter jets. Russia has sold them ICBM's. Germany and the others all profit from this deal. Oh Obama gets his legacy by saying he and he alone was able to deal with Iran.   none of them will ever put sanctions back on Iran.

Oh, I don't know how the details of the plan will be announced, or by who.  But I'm sure there will be the usual presser in the Oval Office with Netanyahu and Obama -- and if the deal is done, it wouldn't surprise me to hear it mentioned by both men.
