Now Chrissie Hynde attacks today's lewd pop stars branding them 'sex workers' who have created a 'pornography culture'

    * Singer hit out at scantily-clad stars such as Miley Cyrus and Rihanna
    * 64-year-old also accused them of doing a 'great deal of damage' to women
    * Launched scathing attack during tense interview on BBC's Woman's Hour

By Sam Creighton

She provoked fierce debate by saying it was her own fault for being sexually assaulted at 21.

And now Chrissie Hynde has waded into another contentious area – the overly sexualised nature of modern pop music.

In an obvious reference to scantily-clad stars such as Miley Cyrus and Rihanna, the former Pretenders lead singer branded them ‘sex workers’ for selling music by ‘bumping and grinding’ in their underwear. The 64-year-old also accused them of doing ‘a great deal of damage’ to women with their risque performances.

Miss Hynde launched the scathing attack during a tense interview on BBC’s Woman’s Hour yesterday. She suggested that today’s provocatively-dressed stars are sending the wrong message about how people should view sex.

Miss Hynde added: ‘I don’t think sexual assault is a gender issue as such, I think it’s very much it’s all around us now.

‘It’s provoked by this pornography culture, it’s provoked by pop stars who call themselves feminists. Maybe they’re feminists on behalf of prostitutes – but they are no feminists on behalf of music, if they are selling their music by bumping and grinding and wearing their underwear in videos.

‘That’s a kind of feminism – but, you know, you’re a sex worker is what you are.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
Chrissie is as liberal as they come, but she speaks the truth here.

But, if she were a young tart making money on her sexuality, she'd keep her pie hole shut. Typical liberal, morals are simply situational. Poor Chrissie is just upset that she isn't in a position to sell her sexuality.

The Pretenders were big in the age of Madonna. She could have went that route and didn't. Never liked her politics but she was always true to her music.

I've always been a fan of The Pretenders and I remember that Chrissie was one of the few women in rock that never dressed provocatively at all - now, I realize that was probably because of being sexually assaulted when she was younger.  But, Chrissie NEVER dressed to sell sex.

Agreed.  Compare "Talk of the Town" to some Madonna sluttage anthem.  "Brass In Pocket" another positive tune.  I watched her on "Sunday CBS Morning" or something like that.  She's a grandmother.  She kept her American accent while living in London, unlike again, Madonna's affectation.
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

She never did. She refused point blank.

  • Words full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.
I also appreciate that she didn't refer to Miley and others as 'musicians'.

I'm not. She's a Liberal. Old school style, not a progressive punk lib.

My favorite Pretenders:

Must admit here, my heart just skipped a beat or three visualizing Chrissie twerking back in the day.

This is an area most feminists won't get into because there is a sense that a woman should have the option of leveraging her sexiness into a living if that is what she wants, particularly if the sexiness gives her power over men.  However, if something is seen as objectification then it is likely to run into much more opposition.  That is why Playboy is heavily criticized whereas Victoria's Secret gets a pass.  Victoria's Secret is seen as using sex for empowerment, whereas Playboy is seen as objectification.

Old school feminists do not tend to make this distinction.

I'd never heard of Chrissie Hynde before until this thread.

If she don't play banjo, why listen to her?   ;)

I gotta admit I passed right by the pretenders and swerved into classical and jazz in my early 20s. I'm just now discovering rock groups from the 70s, 80s and later. I really appreciate that music now, also bluegrass and country from the 50s-60s.
