Quote of the Day: Hillary Clinton tells Americans, ‘Don’t believe your lyin’ eyes’

By Howard Portnoy on July 9, 2015 at 8:48 am

Give Hillary Clinton credit. She managed to elude the media for nearly three months between the announcement of her candidacy on April 12 and her first interview Tuesday, which is no small feat. Granted her interviewer was CNN’s Brianna Keilar, a former staffer for the Ready for Hillary Super PAC. But, in fairness, some — if far from all — the questions were substantial.

More importantly, several of Mrs. Clinton’s answers were eminently quotable, though not the sorts of things you want recorded for posterity. For example, her final answer of the Q & A — to the question of who best portrayed her on “Saturday Night Live” — included the observation, “I’m just going to be my own little self.” It’s an odd statement coming from a former secretary of state but even odder from a politician whose style has been anything but warm and cuddly, adjectives that description evokes. Think back to her rather caustic response to questions by House members about the death on her watch of four American diplomats.

But the most revealing — and hence quotable — answer Clinton gave serves as the headline of CNN’s own summary of the interview: “People should and do trust me.” The response came up in a section of the interview that began with this question:

We see in our recent poll that nearly six in 10 Americans say they don’t believe that you’re honest and trustworthy. Do you understand why they feel that way?

Clinton danced around the subject by evoking once again the vast right-wing conspiracy, which she claimed has been spreading lies about her, but Keilar was persistent. “Do you see any role that you’ve had in the sentiment that we’ve seen,” she asked, “where people are questioning whether you’re trustworthy?” That was met by more blame-shifting, finally leading to this exchange:

KEILAR: Would you vote for someone that you don’t trust?

CLINTON:  Well, they — should and do trust me.

Keilar could have gone back to the CNN poll results she previously cited, indicating that 6 out of 10 respondents don’t trust her, but that would have made Clinton look foolish.

Hillary blatantly lied about whether she ever received a subpoena yesterday... but nary a peep on the network "news" programs, which by now is unsurprising, but still somehow depressing for anyone who has not quite given up all hope for the Republic.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

  • WE are NOT ok!
We are still over a year away from the primary election...time is definitely on the GOP side right now.  The longer Clinton is "investigated" the better it is. I'm still betting she will come up with an excuse as to why she has to bow out of the presidential race. With any luck after Barry leaves office she will be brought up on criminal charges and she will take Barry down with her.
I Believe in the United States of America as a Government of the people, by the people, for the people; whose just powers are derived from the consent of the governed; a democracy in a republic; a sovereign nation of many sovereign states; a perfect union one and inseparable; established upon those principles of freedom, equality, justice and humanity for which American patriots sacrificed their lives and fortunes.  I therefore believe it is my duty to my country to love it; to support its Constitution; to obey its laws to respect its flag; and to defend it against all enemies.

This is such an opportunity for the stupid party. And I have confidence they will, as usual, blow it. I listened to Michael Medved yesterday and he made an incredibly simple, yet pertinent point. "American voters elect people they like."

I also think, when presented a choice of two people they don't like, the default position is to vote Democrat, (they're for the people, don't you know?).

Hillary is exceedingly unlikable. Her campaign hides her because the more you see her, the more you dislike her. Meanwhile, what LIVs are seeing of Republicans is a combative, unfocused, and unlikable Donald Trump.

We know issues matter. We know a candidate's record, and abilities are critically important. Americans are stupid. They will vote for someone they like. If the GOP wants to win, it's essential to nominate someone that "you'd like to have a beer with".
