The unprecedented trading halt on the nearly 200-year old stock exchange began at 11:32 a.m. Eastern Time.
In a statement the NYSE said it was attempting to fix what appeared to be a technical glitch.
“We’re currently experiencing a technical issue that we’re working to resolve as quickly as possible. We will be providing further updates as soon as we can, and are doing our utmost to produce a swift resolution, communicate thoroughly and transparently, and ensure a timely and orderly market re-open,” said Marissa Arnold a spokeswoman with NYSE, which is owned by Intercontinental Exchange Inc. ICE, -1.72%
The halt isn't impacting other exchanges, including exchanges electronic platform NYSE ARCA, according to reports. NYSE said it expects to cancel all orders made before the markets seized up.
A spokesman at Nasdaq OMX NDAQ, -1.90% also said its platform was trading normally.
The halt aroused some suspicions of a possible cyberattack but NYSE in a tweet said that it is technical snafu wasn't a hack.
