NEW YORK ( TheStreet) -- First Greece, then China. And now a computer glitch?

As if investors didn't have enough to worry about, the New York Stock Exchange halted trading in all securities at midday Wednesday in what appears to be technical problems with the trading system. The halt began at 11:32 a.m. EDT. Reports said the NYSE was working on a major technical issue. The NYSE said all open orders will be canceled.

Separately, The Wall Street Journal's Web site also appeared to be down for some users.

Unfortunately, HealthCare.gov is still up.

Which is ironic considering its history of being down.  Almost scary...

Healthcare.gov is a study of gross incompetence.
NYSE has "mysteriously" crashed--more than likely a hack.
Specially since the exchange cannot explain the problem.
Maybe NYSE letting money managers plan their exit strategies.  Scary?  Yep

Yeah, too many "technical" issues on the heels of China and Greece to be just coincidences.  Wonder how many sell orders there were pending at the time?

Exactly correct, MAC.

This is a strategy to stem a stock market meltdown.

Futures, options, non-NYSE ETF's are still trading, so far they are holding where they were. Not sure we were headed to a meltdown, but  do find that three computer glitches with three different companies on the same day to be a little too coincidental to me.

Just a little technical issue, nothing to see here.

NYSE halts trading due to 'technical' issue
Other U.S. exchanges operate normally
Yahoo Finance
By Adam Samson

Trading was halted across all symbols on the New York Stock Exchange's main platform Wednesday as a result of a technical hiccup, and was expected to resume before the closing bell.

The Big Board said in a statement to Yahoo Finance that it is "doing [its] utmost to produce a swift resolution, communicate thoroughly and transparently, and ensure a timely and orderly market re-open."

NYSE spokesperson Marissa Arnold declined to offer specifics on the root of the issue. However, a NYSE status bulletin indicated trading across NYSE and NYSE MKT was halted on all symbols as of 11:32 a.m. ET. A notice later in the day indicated all open orders had been cancelled.

NYSE President Thomas Farley told CNBC the exchanges were likely to re-open at 2:45 p.m. or 3 p.m ET.

NYSE's all-electronic ARCA equities market was unaffected and continuing normal operations, according to a NYSE status update. NYSE's AMEX and ARCA options markets were also operating normally.

On Twitter the NYSE headed off any concerns that the trading halt was caused by a malicious cyberattack: "The issue we are experiencing is an internal technical issue and is not the result of a cyber breach. We chose to suspend trading on NYSE to avoid problems arising from our technical issue."

Meanwhile, other major exchanges including Nasdaq (NDAQ), and BATS, declared so-called self-helps against NYSE, indicating they are routing trades away from the exchange.

The main NYSE market handled about 13.4% of all U.S. daily volume in June on average, according to data from BATS, compared to 15.8% for Nasdaq. Thus far on Wednesday, NYSE had handled 6.4% of U.S. volume, far short of its average.

A spokesperson for the Securities and Exchange Commission, Wall Street's top cop, didn't immediately respond to a Yahoo Finance request for comment on the matter. The White House said it was monitoring the situation, but noted the issue was not sparked by a malicious player.

NYSE is operated by the IntercontinentalExchange (ICE).

Nasdaq suffered from the so-called Flash Freeze just about two years ago in which a "combined series of technology events" halted trading on the electronic exchange for about three hours. Initially, it was thought that high-frequency trading could have played a role in the freeze, but Nasdaq eventually said that was not part of the cause.

'Chugging along'

U.S. stocks were down sharply on Wednesday, but traders attributed the move to worries about China and Greece.

Michael Block, chief strategist at Rhino Trading Partners in New York, noted volume was already light before the NYSE issue, and has since narrowed. However, he said "stocks are trading so we’re chugging along."

As of 1:15 p.m. ET, the S&P 500 was off 24.5 points, or 1.2%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down 182 points, or 1%, and the Nasdaq Composite shed 66.3 points, or 1.3%.

China's Shanghai Composite, which already fell into bear-market territory, plummeted 5.9% overnight in volatile action. The move came despite attempts by the country's government to shore up the equity market there.

"Let’s not call it a correction in China, let’s call it what it really is, a crash. Just because it didn’t happen in just one day like other so called crashes doesn’t make it any less so," Peter Boockvar, chief market analyst at The Lindsey Group, wrote in a note to clients.

"What is most significant though is that it came in the face of almost every attempt possible by Chinese authorities to prevent it from happening."

The view of the government is that all money, property, and wealth, always ultimately belongs to them. They are simply 'granting' you the right to use it.

Once Greece and the EU started kicking around the idea of confiscating deposits, that made everything much, much, worse. Who is going to save wealth in a bank when the government is saying that they may or may not let you have access to it when you need it the most?

The ironic piece is that we are in 2015 and yet many people today are stuffing cash in their home, to keep the government from taking it from them. Next the government will make owning gold or silver as they determine it to be 'illegal'.

In short, in 2015 our Liberal Democrat government is taking us back to the 1930s. And I'm am not convinced that it is simple incompetence or an accident.

Somebody or some group is behind all this chaos, and it is not Mr. Obama. Obama is just a toy to whoever or whatever these giants are.

No 'nefarious actor' in NYSE, United outages, Homeland Security chief says
L.A. Times

Quote

First, United Airlines had a "network connectivity" issue that grounded all its planes for over an hour. Then, the New York Stock Exchange halted trading. And around the same time, the website of the Wall Street Journal went down..

Wednesday's outages immediately ignited speculation about a coordinated cyberattack. No evidence so far points to any kind of hacking, but the series of major outages nonetheless underscored the vulnerability of large and vital institutions in the digital age.

The flurry of problems paralyzed parts of the business world, starting with a computer system outage that wreaked havoc on travelers' schedules with extended delays.

A few hours later, the stock exchange halted trading over an apparent technical issue. Trading in all shares stopped abruptly at 11:32 a.m. EDT, and as of 12:45 p.m. EDT, trading had not resumed.

A federal official told The Times that there’s no indication that problems experienced by United or the NYSE are related to a cyber attack and that the events appear to be unrelated.

“The issue we are experiencing is an internal technical issue and is not the result of a cyber breach,” the exchange tweeted Wednesday afternoon. “We chose to suspend trading on NYSE to avoid problems arising from our technical issue.”

In a statement, United Airlines said the ground stop was caused by a “network connectivity issue.”

Separately, the website for the Wall Street Journal also appeared to go dark for a short time.

The Journal’s website was partially restored later, and a message at the top of its homepage advised readers that the site was experiencing “technical difficulties,” and that the full site would “return shortly.” It returned fully around noon EDT.

The shutdowns were dramatic enough to elicit a statement from Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson.

“The malfunctions at United and the NYSE were not the result of any nefarious actor,” Johnson said, adding that he spoke with the CEO of United, Jeff Smisek, earlier on Wednesday. “We know less about the Wall Street Journal at this point, but their system is back up again, as is United Airlines,” he said.

This article will be updated.

Barely!

I've seen this scenario in Diehard 4.

Storyline

When someone hacks into the computers at the FBI's Cyber Crime Division; the Director decides to round up all the hackers who could have done this. When he's told that because it's the 4th of July most of their agents are not around so they might have trouble getting people to get the hackers. So he instructs them to get local PD'S to take care of it. And one of the cops they ask is John McClane who is tasked with bringing a hacker named Farrell to the FBI. But as soon as he gets there someone starts shooting at them. McClane manages to get them out but they're still being pursued. And it's just when McClane arrives in Washington that the whole system breaks down and chaos ensues.

I know. Laugh if it makes you feel better. But your laughter does not change anything.

I do know that ironic laughter is a product of stress. Just keep laughing. That would be my advice to anyone. It may be the only thing that gets us though what is happening.

Does someone have to hit you in the face with a ballbat? What does it take for you to realize something is not right?

Thanks Famous.  The article only adds to my thoughts that the shutdown of the NYSE may have been less a glitch and more a planned action to slow down a feared crash.  As for China, perhaps they will look to a Franklin Delano Chang...
