This is a must read and really ought infuriate everyone. It's a story about the Independence Day Parade which occurred where Mark's offices are located in Woodsville, NH, and which for over 200 years has been a shared event with the town of Wells River, VT.
But not this year. Not on the VT side, anyway. And all because the authorities in Well River failed to put up the proper detour signs. Sweet heavens.
Mark says of the wimpiness of the parade participants and organizers from both sides of the border who acquiesced to this nonsense:
This is the wretched passivity of a supine people. The local government can't do anything unless it's got permission from the state government and the state government can't do anything unless it complies with the national government (there's nothing "federal" about a sign law that prevents a village holding a parade). But "we didn't want to see anyone get hurt" - so just stay at home and shelter in place until a federally-approved sign can be installed by a state-credentialed official. For this you threw off a king?
Why, yes, Mark, that is why, but please don't hit us. We are bleeders.
