Rumsfeld : Bush was wrong about democracy

Author: David P. Goldman June 7, 2015

Chatham House Rules

Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld told the Times of London yeseterday that president George W. Bush was wrong to try to bring democracy to Iraq. “I’m not one who thinks that our particular template of democracy is appropriate for other countries at every moment their histories,” the British newspaper quoted him. This is a momentous concession: the Republican Party continues to drag the Bush legacy around with it like the chains of Marley’s Ghost, and a repudiation of Bush’s core policy by a member of his inner circle is something of a sea-change.

It sounded good at the time, but in hindsight it doesn't seem to have worked out the way we hoped - and I know that it wouldn't have been near the debacle it is now, if not for Obama - but I think it would still have been an uneasy peace at any rate.  For sure, Obama created the vacuum which fed ISIS - but it would be an eternal battle to keep these tribal forces from trying to destroy each other.  This is just a region of the world that has always been a boiler-keg, it always has been that way.

There was nothing wrong/improper about Bush's idea of introducing Democracy to Iraq.

Even though tribal feuds go back hundreds of years, a stable government guided by a 'Constitution' of sorts would have brought industry, commerce to the country.

IOW...if a man has a job with a steady paycheck, he'll put down his weapon and pick up a lunchbox.  Just like what's her name said...she of the Obama administration.

But pulling out a residual force and essentially killing the Status of Forces (SOF) arrangement brought instability and suicidal bombings again.

Obama has gone further, by sabotaging...essentially disarming the Iraqis so they can't defend themselves.  He is a co-conspirator with Iran, and certainly the Muslim Brotherhood/Hamas/Hezbolla.

Under Obama, our friends are now our enemies and vice versa...our enemies are allies or 'useful idiots'.

1. Gen. Colin Powell doctrine, see link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powell_Doctrine

(probably would not have invaded Iraq, using all doctrine parameters)

2. Powell advised in favor of a larger invasion force, but Rumsfeld, Cheney and Bush opted to go ahead, with insufficient numbers of troops

3. Powell "If you break it, you own it."

Smart ass "conservatives" who bad-mouth Powell, for not being as "conservative" as they would like, dismiss Powell. But Powell was correct, and knowledgeable people know that now, even if they cannot admit it.
