It's time we have a holiday to honor those who try to stop wars, too

Updated by Dylan Matthews on May 25, 2015, 4:00 p.m. ET

Memorial Day and Veterans Day often get equated, but there is an essential distinction between the two. Veterans Day honors all who have served the American military in wars. Memorial Day honors those who've perished. It's an annual reminder that wars have grave human costs, which must be both recognized and minimized.

Those costs are not inevitable. We ought to also set aside time to remember those throughout American history who have tried hardest to reduce them, to prevent unnecessary loss of life both American and foreign: war resisters.

We do, they are called Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

These are honoring those who actually work to stop wars in the only way that has ever worked, defeating the enemy.

Drum circles and sending positive vibes has never stopped a war.

Let's be honest, please.

War resisters don't try to stop wars: they try to avoid having to fight in them. There's no excuse for trying to pass off cowardice as moral integrity.
"The most terrifying force of death, comes from the hands of Men who wanted to be left Alone. They try, so very hard, to mind their own business and provide for themselves and those they love. They resist every impulse to fight back, knowing the forced and permanent change of life that will come from it. They know, that the moment they fight back, their lives as they have lived them, are over. -Alexander Solzhenitsyn

I'll go for it if the holiday consists of rounding the skels up and shooting them.

Abraham Lincoln, then in his only term as a congressman from Illinois, questioned Polk's rationale and introduced what came to be known as the "spot resolutions" demanding that the president point out the exact spot on which American blood had been spilled, to prove that it was really American land. Lincoln received vociferous attacks from Democratic newspapers and meetings back in his district; participants at one rally condemned him as "this Benedict Arnold of our district." But he was on the right side of history: the war was unjustified and caused needless suffering.
Of course, if we're only speaking of war resistance, we'd better forget what he did 15 years later.

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
The problem is that most 'antiwar' people are commies who aren't really antiwar. That's just their trojan horse to drive a nation into impotence, self-doubt, and instability via sedition, so that they can create a power vacuum giving them the opportunity to take over, and then bait-and-switch with a totalitarian dictatorship.
The Republic is lost.
