GREENVILLE, S.C. — A South Carolina veterans group is adopting the name of Capt. Kimberly Hampton, the first female pilot killed in combat in Iraq.

The 27-year-old Army officer died in 2004 when her helicopter was shot down by enemy fire over Fallujah. Hampton, a native of Easley near Greenville, was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Air Medal. She was also awarded the Purple Heart which recognizes members of the armed forces wounded in combat.

Her name is being adopted Saturday by Chapter 845 of the Military Order of the Purple Heart at the group's statewide convention in Greenville.

Organizers say Hampton's parents Dale and Ann are attending the renaming ceremony prior to an evening dinner at the convention.
