Indiana Schools Planning “Blacks Only” Field Trips

At schools in Indiana, they have a bunch of exciting field trips planned.
They’re sending third-graders to local colleges to encourage them to start thinking about higher education. They’re also probably encouraging them to think about how awesome segregation is because these field trips are for black students only.
ABC57.com is reporting that parents in South Bend are outraged at the racist practice, but the organizer is defending his decision.
Dr. G. David Moss is the director for African-American student/parent services with the South Bend Community Schools Corporation. He says statistically black students are less likely to think of college as a real possibility.
“I want these third graders to have the opportunity to think of themselves as college students,” says Dr. Moss.
Dr. Moss says that’s why he organized this initiative for those students to visit higher education institutions around South Bend.
“We take them to a college campus, have them meet African-American students, modeling the idea that as a black person, college is a great place,” says Dr. Moss.
Parents aren’t buying it.
“We should be able to do everything together and not separate,” says Charles Yost, a South Bend father.
“I feel like all kids should be going,” says Deirdra Mullings who has a son going on one of the field trips.
“It creates a double standard,” says Kelley Garing, a South Bend mother.
“I just think it breeds intolerance and creates misunderstandings,” says South Bend mother, Kelley Garing.
