DMV overwhelmed with license demands by illegals

California not prepared for 500,000 applications in 3 months

California – already beset by economic woes, budget shortfalls and a devastating drought that has resulted in mandatory rationing of water – now has another problem on its hands.

The state’s Department of Motor Vehicles is overwhelmed with applications for driver’s licenses by illegal aliens in a new program it established three months ago.

The DMV was prepared for offering license to 1.4 million illegals over the first three years of the program. But, in the first three months, it has been hit with nearly 500,000.

The number has surprised officials who spent months bracing for an influx of new customers by hiring staff, opening new DMV offices and extending hours.

“The interest in this program is far greater than anyone anticipated,” DMV Director Jean Shiomoto said in a statement.

Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Texas and New Jersey are currently debating similar laws extending driver’s licenses to those who entered the country illegally. Georgia just defeated such a proposal. Ten states and the District of Columbia currently offer licenses to illegals. They include: Vermont, Connecticut, Maryland, Illinois, Colorado, Utah, Nevada, New Mexico and California.
