Iran March 31st Deadline as Worthless as All of Obama’s Deadlines

Posted By Daniel Greenfield On April 1, 2015 @ 12:21 am In The Point | No Comments

You know that March 31st deadline? April Fools.

It’s the deadline that never ends. Here’s July 2014.

Diplomats have agreed a four-month extension to the deadline for an agreement between Iran and world powers on Iran’s nuclear programme.

Reuters reports that negotiations will now resume in September, with a final deadline set for 24 November.

So how final was that November 2014 deadline?

A deadline for resolving a 12-year-old dispute over Iran’s nuclear program may be extended from Monday until March because of sharp disagreements between Tehran and world powers, officials close to the talks said on Thursday.

Secretary of State John Kerry, trying to put the best face on it, told reporters that a series of “new ideas surfaced” in the last several days of talks. He added that “we would be fools to walk away,” because a temporary agreement curbing Iran’s program would remain in place while negotiations continued.

Fools indeed. And March has come and gone. The deadline is dead. Yet again.

Six world powers and Iran negotiated past a March 31 deadline into the wee hours of Wednesday, struggling to conclude an outline accord on Tehran’s nuclear program in the face of a U.S. threat to abandon the talks.

“We’ve made enough progress in the last days to merit staying until Wednesday,” acting spokeswoman Marie Harf said in a statement. “There are several difficult issues still remaining.”‎

There were “several difficult issues still remaining” last year but so much progress had been made that yadda yadda. But Obama will absolutely walk away. He won’t wait till June…

White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in Washington that U.S. negotiators would not wait until June 30 to walk away from the talks if they could not reach a preliminary political agreement.

“If we’re not able to reach a political agreement, then we’re not going to wait … until June 30 to walk away,” he said.

And then everyone had a good laugh and extended the deadline until Iran test detonates its first nuke.
