New York Sen. Charles Schumer is the heavy favorite to replace Sen. Harry Reid (Nev.) as Senate Democratic leader, and may not even face competition in his bid to lead the caucus.

Schumer’s aides and allies have long made clear that he would seek to replace Reid when he retired. They say he has broad support among his colleagues after helping to engineer the Democratic takeover of the Senate in 2006 and the filibuster-proof majority in 2008 during his stints as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC).

Schumer, the Democratic Policy and Communications Committee chairman, is now the third-ranking member of Democratic leadership. He could face competition in the race from Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.), the second-ranking leader, and Conference Secretary Patty Murray (Wash.), who ranks fourth.
Schumer declined to comment on leadership ambitions Friday, instead releasing a statement praising Reid’s leadership.

“Harry is one of the best human beings I’ve ever met. His character and fundamental decency are at the core of why he’s been such a successful and beloved leader,” he said. “He has left a major mark on this body, this country, and on so many who have met him, gotten to know him, and love him.”

Durbin, who used to be housemates with Schumer, has shown less interest in replacing Reid. He largely avoids the spotlight compared to his New York colleague, who has inspired a standing joke that the most dangerous place in Washington is between Schumer and a television camera.

Murray may emerge as Schumer’s most viable rival for the top leadership spot given her strong support among the women of the Democratic caucus and her record of political and policy accomplishment

Senate Democrats picked up two seats in the 2012 election cycle when Murray served as DSCC chairwoman, beating expectations earlier in the cycle that the party would lose seats.

She brokered one of the biggest bipartisan compromises of the past several years in December of 2013 when she and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) agreed to a budget deal that lifted spending caps for defense and non-defense programs, avoiding a government shutdown.

She thanked Reid for his mentorship in a statement Friday.

“I owe so much to Harry for everything he has done, and for everything he continues to do, to help me fight for my constituents and for families across the country,” she said.

“He has asked me to take on some tough jobs over the years, but I have always appreciated the trust he placed in me, the work he did to make sure I had the space I needed to get the job done, and the knowledge that, no matter what, Harry had my back and was going to fight for what was right,” she added.

In addition to support for women senators, Murray could benefit from the argued need for geographical diversity in the Democratic leadership.

If Hillary Clinton wins the presidency in 2016 and Schumer becomes the next Senate Democratic leader, two of the party’s top leaders would have strong ties to New York and its financial services industry. Clinton represented the state in the Senate from 2001 to 2008.

Murray does not have a lock on Democratic women, however. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.) is a close ally of Schumer’s and would likely back him.

Schumer has also taken a more active role in the day-to-day managing of party strategy and message as Reid’s deputy. He consulted with Reid several times a day when the leader was forced to spend days at home earlier this year suffering from a serious eye injury he sustained while exercising on New Year’s Day.

Some liberal activists would like to see Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), a darling of the left, succeed Reid as leader, and some groups are already pushing her to jump in the race.

“If Elizabeth Warren doesn’t run for president, she should run for leader of the Senate,” said Neil Sroka, communications director of Democracy for America. “The election for [the Senate’s] next Democratic leader shouldn’t be a slam dunk for any early front-runner, especially someone closer to Wall Street while the Wall Street wing of the party is dying and the Elizabeth Warren wing is rising.”

Schumer, a senior member of the Senate Banking Committee who represents New York’s powerful financial industry, has raised millions of dollars from Wall Street donors over his career.

If Durbin, Murray or Warren challenge Schumer, they could receive support from liberal senators who may want to dispel the perception that the party has fallen increasingly under the sway of Wall Street.

Progressives push for Warren as next Senate Democratic leader

By Jonathan Easley - 03/27/15 10:55 AM EDT
Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-Nev.) announcement Friday that he will not seek reelection next year has progressive groups licking their chops at the prospect of seeing Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) as the Democratic leader.

New York Sen. Chuck Schumer, currently Democrats' No. 3 in the Senate, is the heavy favorite to succeed Reid, but progressive groups have other ideas.

Democracy for America and the Progressive Change Campaign Committee are urging Warren to run for president, but say that if she passes, they’d back her or someone from her wing of the party as the next Democratic leader in the Senate.

“There are real concerns about whether Chuck Schumer should be the frontrunner for leadership in the Senate among progressives,” DFA spokesman Neil Sroka told The Hill. “The Wall Street wing of the party, that Chuck has been close to, is dying, and the Warren wing is rising. So if Sen. Warren chooses not to run for president…she should run for leader of the Senate. She’d make a great leader.”
The PCCC echoed that sentiment, predicting the race for Democratic leader won’t be a coronation for the establishment members of the party believed to be next in line.

“Her lifetime of fighting for the little guy against Wall Street power…shows she can think big, wage tough fights against powerful interests, and win key votes in the Senate,” the PCCC said in a statement. “She's the definition of a leader…There will likely not be a coronation to replace Harry Reid as Senate Democratic Leader, and Elizabeth Warren is right up there with others as someone who would be taken very seriously."

In addition to Schumer, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Senate Democratic Conference Secretary Patty Murray (D-Wash.) could be in the mix.

But in Senate races playing out across the country, the progressive groups have shown they’re thirsty for new blood in the party. They credit Warren with bringing their primary initiatives, like the expansion of entitlement programs, into the mainstream.

Both the DFA and PCCC cited Thursday's vote on a Warren amendment to expand Social Security benefits, which was backed by 42 Democrats in the Senate, as evidence the Massachusetts Democrat already has the gravitas to lead the party.

“Nearly the entirety of the Democratic caucus voted to expand Social Security benefits last night,” Sroka said. “She’s shown the ability to lead in the caucus and there’s no doubt she could be a real force for the party.”

Reid backs Schumer to succeed him as leader
By Associated Press Published: March 27, 2015, 12:12 pm Updated: March 27, 2015, 12:13 pm

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid is backing New York Sen. Chuck Schumer to succeed him as Democratic leader.

Reid issued his endorsement Friday morning, shortly after announcing he would be retiring next year instead of running for re-election.

Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson says that the choice is up to Senate Democrats, “but Sen. Reid thinks Sen. Schumer has earned it.”

Schumer is currently the Senate Democrats’ third-in-command, behind Dick Durbin of Illinois. The outspoken and politically astute Schumer was already viewed as Reid’s most likely successor. But Reid’s decision to bypass Durbin and give his blessing to Schumer could seal the deal.

Durbin endorses Schumer for Dem leader

By Alexander Bolton - 03/27/15 03:32 PM EDT
Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin (Ill.) will back New York Sen. Charles Schumer as the next Senate Democratic leader.

Durbin, the second-ranking member of the Democratic leadership, told The Washington Post Friday that he would run for reelection to his current post at the end of 2016.

That would allow Schumer, who currently holds the No. 3 spot in the Democratic leadership, to leapfrog him.

Durbin told Schumer, “I think you’ve earned this,” according to the Post. He began making calls to colleagues Friday to inform them of his intention to keep his position as whip.
Durbin and Schumer for years shared a row house on Capitol Hill with former Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), but they were at times seen as potential rivals to succeed Reid.

Schumer’s political stock shot up after he helped Democrats capture the Senate in 2006 while serving as Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee chairman. He is perceived as more of a centrist than Durbin, especially on regulatory issues affecting the financial services industry.

Durbin praised Schumer Friday as “a pragmatist” who “listens closely to his caucus.”

Senate Democratic Conference Secretary Patty Murray (Wash.), who ranks fourth in the leadership, has yet to say whether she will try to move up the ladder.

She could opt to challenge Schumer or Durbin, or run for the Democratic Policy and Communications Center chairmanship Schumer would vacate at the end of the 114th Congress.

From the frying pan to the fire.  A gun toting supporter of taking guns away, who doesn't have Obamacare, a non-supporter of Israel, a non-supporter of the military, a supporter of Islamic terrorists, tells me he's just another worthless sack of wind in the District of Corruption.

Meet Chuck Schumer, One of the Most Trivial Pols Ever. And Your Next Senate Minority Leader
A partial listing of some of the things that the New York senator has tried to ban over the years.

http://reason.com/blog/2015/03/27/meet-chuck-schumer-one-of-the-most-trivi

It's long been said that the most dangerous place in Washington is between Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) and a TV camera.

With news of the resignation of the historically awful Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.), the odds are good that Schumer will now ascend to the role of Senate Minority Leader. Indeed, Reid—who's one clear accomplishment after 600 years in office was putting the late Robert Byrd to sleep while talking about soldiers and war—has anointed Schumer his preferred successor.

So what kind of leader is Chuck Schumer? He is among the very most trivial politicians to serve in that crucible of triviality, mediocrity, and dead weight we call the U.S. Senate.

No issue is too stupid or inconsequential for Schumer to weigh in on, inevitably calling for a ban or regulation that serves no other possible purpose than to shine a light on the glory and grandeur of Chuck Schumer.

I despise Reid with a passion, but the bottom line is he's a very skilled player of the game in many respects. Schmuckie Chuckie is a bumbling loon.
