White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest admits that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and President Obama did exchange emails while she was in the Obama administration.

“The president, I think as many people expected, did, over the course of his first several years in office, trade emails with his secretary of state,” Earnest confirmed, but added that the number of emails they exchanged was “not large.”

Earnest said that Obama did know Clinton’s email address, but was not probably not aware of the details of the address or the existence of the secretary’s private server.

“The point is the president did email Secretary Clinton. I assume that he recognized the email address that he was emailing back to,” Earnest said, but said that Obama probably didn’t discuss Clinton’s compliance with the federal records act.

Any gaps in Clinton’s emails, Earnest explained, would not involve the White House, but rather the State Department.
