Shock Report: Public School Teaches Only White Men Capable Of Racism, Sexism
The backlash was swift and sincere.
An image reportedly taken from a school textbook is making its rounds through social media this week for its declaration that minorities cannot be racist, and that women are incapable of sexism. The book in question is being identified as Is Everyone Equal, one of a series of books designed to expose kids to multiculturalism. Scroll down for an image of the offending page.
The passage at the center of this brewing controversy takes an inflexible position regarding which individuals are not allowed to be defined as sexists or racists. As it turns out, the textbook’s authors apparently believe anyone outside of white males are automatically innocent.
According to the book:
There is no such thing as reverse racism or reverse sexism (or the reverse of any form of oppression). While women can be just as prejudiced as men, women cannot be “just as sexist as men” because they do not hold political, economic, and institutional power.
When the story began to circulate online, several Twitter users rushed to denounce the message apparently being disseminated among public school students.
“They ARE right,” one response stated, “reverse racism/sexism doesn’t exists; it’s just called racism/sexism.”
Another user commented that it is “as if they actually think racism doesn’t exist in countries outside US where whites are minority.”
Others pointed out the history of intolerance toward newly arrived – and white – Europeans in America.
One commenter stated that “they don’t even remember ‘Irish need not apply,’” while another recalled discriminatory treatment of Italian immigrants.
Perhaps the most cynical response came from one user who saw the lesson presented as another reason not to have children.
“Nobody needs to be in a world like this,” the commenter concluded.
