The declassified files revealed details about the life of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi before he became the most-feared terror leader in the world - heading the terrorist organisation responsible for the brutal beheadings of several Western hostages.

The records, released to the Business Insider through a Freedom of Information request, come from when Baghdadi spent time in the custody of the US Army.

His "capture date" was said to have been identified in the files as 4 February, 2004 and his "release in place" was dated as 8 December, 2004.

The records, according to Business Insider, suggest he was captured in Fallujah, west of Baghdad in Iraq, and held at multiple prison facilities including Camp Bucca in southern Iraq.

His status on his detainee ID card listed him as a "civilian detainee" which means he was not then officially thought to be an insurgent.

The new documents highlight some details about Baghdadi

His "civilian occupation" was identified as "ADMINISTRATIVE WORK (SECRETARY)" - showing a small glimpse of the life of Baghdadi before he turned to IS.

In the files Baghdadi was identified by his birth name, Ibrahim Awad Ibrahim Al Badry, and while his date of birth was redacted, he is thought to be 43 years old.

His birthplace was identified in the documents as Fallujah and the data also revealed some details about his family, identifying him as married and his next of kin as his uncle.

In an interview published in the book 'ISIS: Inside The Army of Terror', authors Michael Weiss and Hassan Hassan relayed an account of Baghdadi's capture from IS expert Dr. Hisham al-Hashimi.

Al-Hashimi, who claims to have met the IS leader in the 1990s, said Baghdadi was captured by the US while visiting a friend in Fallujah.

He further added that "Baghdadi was not the target - it was Nessayif".

There has been an air of secrecy surrounding Baghdadi since IS gained notoriety last year.

There are very few pictures of him known to exist and it has been reported that even the men who follow him do not communicate with him directly.

He is also understood to wear a mask when he addresses his commanders, earning him the nickname "the invisible sheikh".
