Italy Mobilizes 5,000-Strong Military Force to Fight ISIS in Libya

The government of Italy appears to be taking seriously the threats posed by the Islamic State (ISIS) to its nation. Italian officials said on Monday that they are considering sending 5,000 troops into Libya to combat the country’s burgeoning jihadist presence.

In a recent video purportedly produced by the Islamic State’s Libya affiliate, the group slaughtered twenty-one Christians and vowed to seek out Rome as its next target. “And we will conquer Rome, by Allah’s permission, the promise of our prophet, peace be upon him,” a North American English-accented militant leader said after his comrades slaughtered the Christian hostages.

Italian Defense Minister Robert Pinotti said that the 5,000 troops were ready and willing to lead a unilateral mission if necessary.

Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said on Monday that “the proposal is to wait, so the U.N. Security council can work with a bit more conviction on Libya” in reaching a diplomatic accord, the Associated Press reported. The Italian head of state said that the U.N. should recruit “all the players, the local tribes, African Union countries, Arab countries, the Europeans” to fight ISIS in Libya.

The world is now finding out what it feels like for the United States to be absent from the world stage.  Not only that, for the US to be actively aiding the bad guys!   If we had some real leadership from someone that is a real American - Italy wouldn't be waiting for the UN to try to get a bunch of tribes together for a "diplomatic accord".  How many people have died waiting for those?

Assuming that this isn't just huffing and puffing and they really do send this force to fight they better send plenty of body bags.

So true, but with this POC we have as POTUS, don't expect anything from the US.

IMHO, the only 2 groups are the Israelis and the US Special Forces and Black Ops.

If we didn't have such a pathetic CIC, I'd include the US military but under the present rules of engagement (if anyone can figure them out), I wouldn't want my troops anywhere near that cesspool.

This is after years of their government dismantling their military, while growing their social programs.  I don't want to see bloodshed in Italy, but they were asking for an invasion by ignoring the importance of their military.

Very true - there can be no imaginable excuse for allowing the military to diminish to this point, but it is.  However, the leadership has soiled its armor to call up everything they have.
