Yep. When he got it, Utah gave the condemned the choice of firing squad or hanging. Gilmore chose the firing squad.

It was Gary Gilmore's execution by firing squad that became the first execution since the Supreme Court had previously declared capital punishment laws unconstitutional some years' before.

Gilmore's last words, if I recall correctly, were "let's do it."

I would argue that the firing squad is the fastest and most humane method of inflicting the death penalty.
