Horrible! White House Defends Claims that Paris Attack on Kosher Deli was “Random!”

So a couple of weeks ago President Obama did a series of interviews on a wide range of subjects with the liberal pseudo-intellectuals at Vox.com.

They covered a lot of ground and we’ve got an article about the broader range of issues from that interview forthcoming… but I wanted to focus on one part of the interview for today because something of a kerfluffle took place at the White House because of said interview. Here’s the segment of the interview that got discussed at a White House press briefing on Tuesday.

(The main thrust of the controversy starts at about the 1:50 mark.)

Here’s the money quote that has set a few people off…

Look, the point is this: my first job is to protect the American people. It is entirely legitimate for the American people to be deeply concerned when you've got a bunch of violent, vicious zealots who behead people or randomly shoot a bunch of folks in a deli in Paris. We devote enormous resources to that, and it is right and appropriate for us to be vigilant and aggressive in trying to deal with that — the same way a big city mayor's got to cut the crime rate down if he wants that city to thrive. But we also have to attend to a lot of other issues, and we've got to make sure we're right-sizing our approach so that what we do isn't counterproductive. I would argue that our invasion of Iraq was counterproductive to the goal of keeping our country safe.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest had a doozy of a press conference on Tuesday when he was forced to spend 7 minutes defending President Obama’s decision to downplay the threat of terrorism… just days after another American was killed in terrorist hands.

(His defense of the deli shooting being characterized as “random” begins around the 3:25 mark.)

No doubt, it’s hard watching Earnest squirm at the tough (but fair) questions about President Obama’s terrible choice of words on terrorism. But things get even harder to watch when he tries to defend the idea that the Paris attack on the Kosher Deli was “random.” Would a bunch of Islamic jihadists who want to kill a bunch of “random” people choose a deli? Or would they be more likely to pick a crowded mall or a subway station at rush hour? It’s ridiculous to call it a “random” shooting. The terrorists may have picked a “random” kosher deli, but the choice of victims was hardly random. They were looking to kill Jews and they KNEW they could kill Jews in a kosher deli. Sure, other people may have been caught in the violence too… but in a kosher deli they were assured to have Jewish victims.

Don’t worry, the internet isn’t letting the President get away with his ridiculous comments. Our friends are responding in great form!
