Obama: Don’t Worry, Iran Nuke Would Be Against Their Religion

Nuclear deal still possible.

On Monday, at a news conference in the White House with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel, President Obama said that the U.S. has nothing to fear regarding the nuclear deal with Iran– because nuclear weapons run counter to their faith.

“If in fact what they claim is true, which is they have no aspiration to get a nuclear weapon, that in fact, according to their Supreme Leader, it would be contrary to their faith to obtain a nuclear weapon,” Obama said. “If that is true, there should be the possibility of getting a deal.”

This deal allows Iran to “have peaceful nuclear power,” according to the president, and also allows the U.S. to have “absolute assurance” that they will not be pursuing a nuclear weapon.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has long claimed that Iranian nuclear power would pose a threat to world peace and security. While Iran says the nuclear program is for peaceful purposes, Israel fears what Iran will do, considering Iranian leaders have called for the destruction of Israel.
