NEW DELHI — There’s been another security breach at the White House, press secretary Josh Earnest confirmed here Monday: an unidentified “device” on the grounds of the White House that he says the Secret Service has recovered and is investigating.
Earnest said there is no current threat to the first family. President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama are here in the Indian capital as part of a three-day trip that finishes Tuesday, but their daughters are at home.
“Early indications are that it does not pose any sort of ongoing threat to anybody at the White House,” Earnest said.
The device was recovered in the early morning in Washington, before sunrise. Earnest said he did not have up-to-date information about the device, its origin or purpose, but called those “legitimate questions” that the White House would work with the Secret Service to release.
A series of security incidents, including several White House fence jumpers last year — particularly the one who made it into the East Room, armed — led to a review of security and a shake-up at the Secret Service.
