I become somewhat cynical when things like this are pronounced by the media (or the weather channel). 

It seems to be reactionary and intended to increase viewership rather than accurately forecast what's coming.

While Staten Island is within New York City limits it is still relatively rural and many of our wooded areas have large feral cat colonies.

Local animal rescue teams are busy setting out protected food stations in areas of known feral colonies in advance of the storm.

Some groups have even constructed insulated emergency shelters to place in exposed areas.

It's heartening to know so many friends of animals care about the welfare of stray cats.

We're getting absolutely pummeled here in S. New Hampshire. Whiteout conditions right now with 40+ mph winds. I'd estimate the snowfall rate at about 3 in./hour, and looking at the latest radar, it's not going anywhere, as a powerful "deformation band" (a classic Nor'easter feature) has set up across the Merrimack Valley.

Fortunately, both my wife's office and mine are closed, for the first time in our memories, so we're just hunkering down and enjoying the show.

Storm Fails To Live Up To Predictions In Some Areas As National Weather Service Meteorologist Apologizes



NEW YORK (CBS Connecticut/AP) — A storm packing blizzard conditions spun up the East Coast early Tuesday, pounding parts of coastal New Jersey northward through Maine with high winds and heavy snow.

While the storm failed to live up to predictions in some areas, eastern Long Island north through Massachusetts and Maine were expected to fare the worst, with 1 to 3 feet of snow, punishing hurricane-force winds and the possibility of some coastal flooding, according to the National Weather Service.

Bruce Sullivan of the National Weather Service said Boston and Providence, Rhode Island, could get about 2 feet.

Some areas of Massachusetts received more than a foot of snow by early Tuesday; Plymouth had almost 16 inches, Shrewsbury almost 15, and Sandwich had 13 inches of snow.

The good thing is that it's very cold (14°F), so the snow is light and fluffy. It's blowing and drifting like crazy, but thankfully not sticking to trees and power lines.
