Charlie Hebdo: Cyberwar enters new phase as Anonymous threatens to target jihadis' Facebook accounts
Jan 12, 2015 16:03 By Jasper Hamill

Hacktivists prepare second round of attacks against extremists in revenge for magazine murders

The hacktivist group Anonymous has announced the second phase of its mission to "avenge" the Charlie Hebdo murders.

It vowed to expose the Facebook accounts of extremists as part of its online war against jihadis.

Exposing Facebook profiles could potentially strike a powerful blow, due to the amount of personal information they contain.

"Phase two of OpCharlieHebdo awaits," Anonymous wrote. "We will be releasing Jihad Facebook user profiles soon."

The hacktivists have also attacked more than 30 alleged extremist Twitter accounts.

These accounts were accessed and defaced, although it now appears as if Twitter itself has decided to shutter them.

Unusually, Anonymous encouraged social media users to report any suspected jihadis to Twitter so they can be banned. Normally, the hacktivists would take action themselves.

Anonymous also took down the forum Ansar al Haqq today and published a list of the other websites it intends to attack.

The hacktivists have not only targeted Islamic websites. They claimed to have brought down a website called Religion of Peace, which is known to publish stories criticising Islam. However, this website now appears to be working again.

Between the assaults, members of Anonymous took the time to tell followers that a website called OpCharlieHebdo.com was actually a fake.

"We're not responsible for [the website]. This is a fake and maybe a scam."

The site was started by a marketing firm called Rantic, which was heavily criticised last year after starting a false page which purported to be counting down to the release of Emma Watson nudes.

Rantic responded with a vile attack piece criticising a Guardian journalist who wrote an article about their OpCharlieHebdo trick.

In a tweet to Rantic, Anonymous wrote: "Please, keep your corporate fingers off."

This is getting serious...

  • Ah, the air is so much fresher here...
Get back to me when they're farting in their general direction. Then I'll know they're serious.

You know we are in trouble when Anonymous presents a bigger threat to Islamic terror than the POTUS.
