French Magazine Hit in Terrorist Attack: 12 Killed, Four Wounded

A terrorist attack in Paris has killed at least 12 in an assault on the headquarters of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Two of the dead are reported to be policemen. Four more are seriously injured.

Three hooded gunmen were seen entering the building armed with AK-47s and according to some witnesses, a rocket launcher. Gunfire was then heard in the building. Two masked gunmen escaped in a black Citroen DS, running over several pedestrians as they escaped.

According to Pierre de Cossette, a broadcast journalist with Europe1 News, "Several men in black cagoules were heard to shout 'the Prophet has been avenged.'" The BBC’s Frank Gardner reports that the gunmen were heard shouting “Allahu Ackbar.” The outlet said that “Two of the gunmen were dressed in the typical jihadist "uniform" of black balaclavas, khaki ammunition pouches and were armed with Kalashnikovs.”

President Francois Hollande has visited the site of the attack and will shortly be attending an emergency cabinet meeting. France has now been raised to the highest possible threat level. This attack was the worst terrorist attack to hit France in 30 years. The President called the attack "an act of exceptional barbarism."

France 2 reported that the attack took place as staff were holding their weekly editorial meeting. Several of the magazine’s staff took refuge on the roof of the building.

Charlie Hebdo published several controversial cartoons of the founder of Islam, Mohammed, in 2011. Shortly afterwards, its offices were firebombed.

This week’s Charlie Hebdo ran a front cover depicting the Islamic State beheading the founder of Islam, Mohammed, who pleads his identity to no avail. It also ran a story about a new novel by author Michel Houllebecq about a hypothetical future in which Islamists take over France. Set in 2022, the book, entitled ‘Submission’ envisages an Islamist President imposing Sharia law and building an Islamist state in Europe.

#JeSuisCharlie is trending on Twitter, as social media users offer their support to the victims of the attack.

Meanwhile, Christians fight abortion and homosexual marriage.
How would you suggest we Christians fight Islamic terrorism when our own elected officials won't do anything or, worse, are funding the terrorists? Perhaps I should blow up a mosque.

It's a good thing that the French are precluded from defending themselves and must rely on the police for protection...

I don't typically use profanity. But this story is bringing me to a boiling point.

The White House (and the feckless, mealy mouthed LEFT) is part of the Islamic terrorism problem. After 9/11 as a nation we were united against terrorism. What happened? Since then, the Democrats and the Left is what happened.

I'm so angry. We should be bringing the fight directly to these bastards. Instead, we're debating whether to call the wholesale murder of innocents workplace violence.

Charlie Hebdo’s unrepentant record

Euronews
Quote
Charlie Hebdo has been publishing satire since its creation in 1969. Its left-wing editorial content was like bare-knuckle boxing, pop, politics, religion all fair game in the secular temple of traditional free expression.

In February 2006, it reprinted Danish daily Jyllands-Posten’s unflattering cartoons of the prophet Mohammed, which had sparked a storm of threatening protests throughout the Muslim world.

The editor-in-chief of the time, Philippe Val, said: “We published those caricatures first out of solidarity with the cartoonists in Denmark, not as a provocation. Exercising the right of freedom of the press is not provocation.”

Charlie Hebdo continued publishing undeterred by recurrent threats from Islamist groups. Unrepentant, in November 2011, it ran an issue re-Christening itself ‘Sharia Hebdo’, a stab at the moral code of Islam. The day it hit the stands, the newspaper’s office was fire-bombed and its website was hacked.

Cartoonist Renald Luzier, known as ‘Luz’, said: “Those people don’t believe in God. They don’t believe in their religion. They believe in fire, disappearance and death but not in their religion. They’re bandits.”

In September 2012, after American embassies in the Middle East had been attacked by crowds protesting violently against a sort of anti-Islamic movie trailer called ‘Innocence of Muslims’, released on Internet, Charlie Hebdo ran more depictions of Mohammed.

Accused by some of spreading hate and slander, its editor-in-chief Stéphane Charbonnier — who died in the latest attack — defended this: “We can’t caricature Mohammed in France? Oh yes we can caricature Mohammed, we can caricature everyone in France. In France, religion is part of a philosophy, like an idea, and I can caricature Mohammed, just like I can caricature Marx.”

The legal complaint brought against the paper went nowhere, though the Foreign Minister questioned the editorial intelligence of what he said poured oil on fire.

Charbonnier, also known as Charb, said: “No one, in fact, knows anything about Mohammed or about this religion, a religion that scares people because every time we talk about it it is to talk about attacks committed by an extreme minority. That’s why I think we should have started there: spreading knowledge about Mohammed and Islam before laughing at it or with it.”

Imam Hassen Chalghoumi, with the municipal Drancy mosque in Seine-Saint-Denis near Paris, called the journalists of Charlie Hebdo ‘the martyrs of freedom’.

Charlie Hebdo cartoonist reveals terrorists threatened to murder her toddler unless she let them in - how she cowered with child under desk as massacre took place

A young mother and cartoonist who survived the Charlie Hebdo massacre in Paris today said she had let the suspected Al Qaeda killers into the magazine office.

Corrine Rey said she had returned from picking up her young daughter from a kindergarten when she was confronted by two heavily armed men wearing balaclavas.

'I had gone to pick up my daughter at day care, arriving in front of the magazine building, where two masked and armed men brutally threatened us,' said Ms Rey, who draws under the name 'Coco'.

'They said they wanted to go up to the offices, so I tapped in the code,' said Ms Rey, referring to the digi-code security system on the inter-phone.

Miss Rey and her daughter hid under a desk, from where they saw two other cartoonists being executed.

'They shot Wolinski and Cabu,' she said, 'It lasted five minutes. I had taken refuge under a desk.

She said the men 'spoke French perfectly' and 'claimed they were 'Al Qaeda terrorists'.

According to Charlie Hebdo's lawyer, four cartoonists were killed by the masked gunmen: Cabu, Wolinski, Tignous and Charb, the pen name of Stephane Charbonnier, also the chief editor at Charlie Hebdo. ...

These people were murdered because of a principle. The idea that people can speak their mind freely without fear.

The perversion of Islam is a cancer and it can only be excised by inherents within the faith. Do they have the courage? There are a few who are finally beginning to show courage – El-Sisi of Egypt is one. Let's hope more will follow his lead.
