Air forces of the Iranian Islamic Revolution Guards Corps have defused several plots hatched to hijack Iranian planes over the last three decades.

On Saturday, Deputy Chief Liaison Officer of the Flight Guards Corps Ya’qoub Baqeri told Iranian Farsnews Agency that they have foiled an attempt by IS insurgents to hijack an Iranian plane.

“IS and other Salafi groups have sought to strike a blow against our country in this way, but fortunately they couldn’t put their plans into action,” Baqeri said.

Baqeri said that in December 2013 the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) praised the Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) forces for their strong record of protecting Iranian flights against hijacking.

“In 2005, the ICAO inspected the methods used by the IRGC for security (of Iranian flights) and we received an excellent score,” Baqeri added.

Furthermore, he continued, “We have had meetings with the representatives of different world states and they had some requests to receive training, but this has not happened yet due to our security considerations.”

In December 2012, he stated that Iran had thwarted 120 plane-hijacking attempts in the last 28 years.

The plane en route from Tehran to Damascus landed safely at the Syrian capital’s airport after the man threatening to hijack the airliner was arrested by the security guards on board.
