MSNBC Host: Don’t Teach Your Kids To Be Colorblind [VIDEO]

In a closing monologue on MSNBC’s “The Cycle,” co-host Touré Neblett urged parents to make their children “racially aware,” by teaching them not to be colorblind. (VIDEO: MSNBC Guest: ‘Foundation Of This Country Is Racism’)

Neblett spoke about how his son asked him about an “I Can’t Breathe” sign he saw riding on a New York City school bus. “I thought, ‘How do I explain that phrase without explaining the whole painful and gruesome Eric Garner situation, and the whole situation between black Americans and the police?’ I didn’t want to give ideas he wasn’t ready to deal with, but I didn’t want to lie to him about the society he lives in, because sugarcoating it could cost him his life…”

“We must talk to our kids about race and teach our kids that everyone is equal, while also teaching them not everyone is treated the same way by society…” Neblett said. “We should teach them that talking about race is not the same as racist talk. We must teach our kids to be racially aware and anti-racist, rather than colorblind.” (VIDEO: MSNBC’s Touré: Romney engaging in ‘n*ggerization’ of Obama)

“If you want to make this country better,” Neblett concluded. “I hope you will try to have these conversations with your kids because a more racially aware young person is far better suited to grow up to be someone to help combat racial inequality.”
