According to a recent KTVI report, hundreds of protesters in St. Louis this week staged roadblocks in response to the grand jury decision not to charge a New York police officer in the death of a suspect earlier this year. One motorist stuck in the snarled traffic that resulted was initially arrested for allegedly striking one of the protesters, an assertion that has since been called into question.
A police report published online states that the driver “observed a large group of people protesting in the intersection” and attempted to pass them safely.
He determined that would be impossible, he told police, when the mob “surrounded his vehicle and began striking, banging and throwing objects at the vehicle, breaking the rear window.”
The driver made another attempt to pass the crowd, he explained, when the surrounding protesters shattered his rear window. He was photographed brandishing a handgun, which reportedly caused the violent mob to disperse upon their discovery of his legally owned weapon.
Police indicated the 57-year-old motorist was ultimately released pending an ongoing investigation. His handling of the incident received plenty of support among social media commenters.
