Obama Gets CT Scan for Sore Throat

This afternoon, President Obama got a CT Scan today for a sore throat has had "over the past couple weeks," according to a statement from his doctor, Ronny L. Jackson.

"This morning, an ear, nose and throat specialist from Fort Belvoir Medical Center conducted a fiber optic exam, under my supervision, of the President’s throat based on symptoms of sore throat over the past couple weeks. The exam revealed soft tissue swelling in the posterior throat and I, in consultation with the specialist, determined that further evaluation with a routine CT scan was prudent.  The CT scan was conducted this afternoon purely as a matter of convenience for the President’s schedule.  The CT scan was normal. The President’s symptoms are consistent with soft tissue inflammation related to acid reflux and will be treated accordingly," Jackson's statement reads.

The White House press secretary said, “The President has been complaining of a sore throat.  In light of that and given that the President has free time in his schedule this afternoon, Dr. Jackson, the President’s physician, recommended he go to Walter Reed for some diagnostic tests. According to Dr. Jackson, the quickly scheduled test is a matter of convenience for the President, not a matter of urgency. We will provide additional updates when available.”

Obama, complaining of sore throat, diagnosed with acid reflux

(Reuters) - President Barack Obama, who had medical tests on Saturday after complaining of a sore throat, is suffering from acid reflux, the president's physician said.

"The president's symptoms are consistent with soft tissue inflammation related to acid reflux and will be treated accordingly," Obama's doctor, Captain Ronny Jackson, said in a statement.

Acid reflux is a condition in which the stomach contents flow back up from the stomach into the esophagus, causing such symptoms as heartburn and sore throat.

Obama went to Walter Reed military hospital for a fiber optic exam of his throat and since swelling was detected, doctors decided to perform a CT scan as well, Jackson said.

"The CT scan was conducted this afternoon purely as a matter of convenience for the President's schedule. The CT scan was normal," Jackson added.

Jackson said he recommended Obama go to Walter Reed for the tests after the president complained of suffering from a sore throat over the past couple of weeks.

Of course it was. I knew that the second I read the headline. Who goes to the hospital and gets a CAT scan for a sore throat. you would have to be crazy.

If I had ordered a CT scan with the primary symptom recent onset sore throat, the insurance company would have sent it back with LOL penciled across the denial. Typically you monitor the condition first before ordering expensive tests. This is clearly overkill.

Presidents and their families always get the most expensive treatment available, and get it early. I don't really have a problem with that. I don't think we have to be cost effective with the First Family's medical care.

What I was hoping to read here was some speculation about what this sore throat could be. Surely there's some more interesting possibility than just acid reflux.
