Surgeon who contracted Ebola virus in Sierra Leone dies at Nebraska hospital

A surgeon who contracted the Ebola virus while working in Sierra Leone died Monday at a Nebraska hospital where he was transported for treatment, the facility said in a statement.

A statement released Monday by Nebraska Medical Center said Dr. Martin Salia "has passed away as a result of the advanced symptoms of the disease." Hospital spokesman Taylor Wilson said Salia died shortly after 4 a.m. Monday.

Salia, 44, was being treated in the medical center's biocontainment unit. He arrived Saturday by plane from West Africa, and was transported by ambulance for treatment at the hospital, where two other Ebola patients have been successfully treated. Officials said Salia might be more ill than the first Ebola patients treated successfully in the United States. On Sunday officials had described his condition as "an hour-by-hour situation."

"Dr. Salia was extremely critical when he arrived here, and unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we weren't able to save him," said Dr. Phil Smith, medical director of the biocontainment unit.

"We used every possible treatment available to give Dr. Salia every possible opportunity for survival," Smith said. "As we have learned, early treatment with these patients is essential. In Dr. Salia's case, his disease was already extremely advanced by the time he came here for treatment."

How did the disease progress so rapidly from prognosis to transport to the USA?

Seems he was beyond help by the time he got here.

Certainly, but his death will fuel the cries of racism nevertheless.

Well, why not catapult infected bodies over the walls and bring infected blankets among the populace?
Why?  Well, because I'm a bastard, that's why.

I understand and get your references.

Was merely asking the question as to why this sad doctor wasn't transported back here sooner?

The 2nd black man to die here on U.S. Soil from Ebola. You can bet Al Sharpton and his ACLU lawyers are figuring out how to score on this.

The tin-foil hat crowd certainly believes in race-specific genetically-engineered viruses...

Probably because everyone reacts to viruses differently.  Also, those who have been treated here, except for Duncan, until now started treatment very quickly.  Salia was already in very bad shape.  Also, he was over 40, and statistics of this outbreak show that people over 40 have a much smaller chance of surviving.

Also interesting is that the doctor had previously tested negative for Ebola -two- times (even though by the second test he was exhibiting symptoms, yet -still- tested negative).

Either the tests aren't all they're cracked up to be, or error by those performing the previous testing.

May have been the type of rapid test which has about a 50-50 chance of being correct.  Most of its false results are false negative so it does have its uses, but should not be considered a definitive test.

    • I try my best ...
He sounds like a great guy. From what I know of him, I like him. It sounds to me like they flew him here as some kind of experiment. He was almost dead on the flight over.

My take on it, is that they wanted to test some kind of late-stage drug/treatment on him, but he was already too far gone.
You cannot "COEXIST" with people who want to kill you.
If they kill their own with no conscience, there is nothing to stop them from killing you.

I think the whole purpose of bringing people here has been exactly that, to test different treatments in a controlled environment.  Yes, it does greatly improve their odds to have them treated at these specialized facilities, but it also gives our scientists a chance to study and test Ebola in ways that simply cannot be done in Africa.

A doctor in the USA just died from Ebola after testing negative for the virus. Early Ebola tests can show false negatives!

(NaturalNews) Initially, when surgeon Martin Salia’s Ebola test came back negative, he and his friends were elated. As noted by The Washington Post, they all sort of celebrated a bit, and relaxed, removing their protective gear and crying with him.

But his symptoms would not go away, and when they lasted another week, Salia was tested once again, on Nov. 10. And this time, the test came back positive, “sending the Sierra Leonean doctor with ties to Maryland on a desperate, belated quest for treatment and forcing the colleagues who had embraced him into quarantine,” the Post reported.

Now, Salia has died while being treated at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, an institution that has treated other Ebola patients. And his family is wondering if the results would have been better had the first test come back positive and he had received more timely treatment.

“We were celebrating. If the test says you are Ebola-free, we assume you are Ebola-free,” Komba Songu M’Briwa, who took care of Salia at the Hastings Ebola Treatment Center in Freetown, told the paper. “Then everything fell apart.”
