Columbia University's graduate students are trying to unionize.

This fall semester, the Graduate Workers of Columbia University began a card campaign, where potential members of the bargaining unit sign cards which say that they wish to be represented by the union. (The G.W.C. is "seeking to represent any student workers doing teaching or research work, on all Columbia campuses," according to its website.)

The union is an affiliate of United Auto Workers Local 2110.

U.A.W. Local 2110 already represents support staff at Columbia University, and at affiliated schools Barnard College and Teachers College.

It  (already) represents New York University's graduate students.

(Union representation of graduate students are private universities is extremely rare.)
