Canada Gets Attacked and Muslims Play the Victim Card

"It’s been a tough week for Canadian Muslims"
In the wake of two Islamic terror attacks in Canada last week that killed two Canadian soldiers, some Muslim leaders are claiming that it is Canada's Muslims who are the biggest victims because of that old bugaboo, the Islamophobia backlash. Atlas Shrugs has a link to a Muslim site that raises that fear while Jihad Watch has another that links to past comments by Karen Armstrong, one of the biggest apologists for Islamic extremism in the West.
This is what we always hear in the wake of any attacks against Westerners by terrorists. The problem with this argument is that it has no real basis in fact. Since 9-11, the much-feared violent attacks against Muslims have not really manifested themselves. To be sure, suspicion, distrust, and yes, dislike of Muslims has increased among an ever-increasing part of the population. It is only natural given the horrors that are on-going around the world and have now reached our shores. It is becoming increasingly impossible to shut down any open and honest discussion of the nature of Islam as an ideology above and beyond its status as a religion. ottawa-war-memorial-shootingAs targets of this supremacist strain of Islam (if it is a strain at all), we have every right to discuss this problem openly without regard to whose sensitivities we may offend. It is our task to separate the ideology from secular Muslims who have no wish to impose their religion on the rest of us.
In addition, blaming poverty or the "rootless and disaffected feeling" of young Muslims in the West or anywhere else is a diversion and a deception. The decision to become a terrorist is made across all social strata and educational levels. Keep in mind that Usama bin Laden was the heir to a wealthy construction business in Saudi Arabia.
In fact, just about everybody in the West has been able to separate the perpetrators from the peaceful Muslims. Mosques are not being burned as are churches in Egypt. Muslims are not being hunted down and attacked and killed as are Christians in so many Islamic countries. Nobody is being beheaded. Muslim women are not being sexually assaulted. There is no vigilantism. That is how it should be. We depend on our government, police, intelligence and military to protect us from harm. Not only that, we demand it. Right now it appears that our governments in many countries of the West-including the US- are letting us down in certain respects.
But can you imagine if the shoe was on the other foot? Westerners would be hanging from lamp posts in Muslim countries and heads would be appearing on stakes in retaliation. That is essentially the difference. If, in fact, a mosque was defaced in Canada, it is regrettable, and I do not condone it, but it is nothing in comparison to what is happening to Christians in the Arab world.
Instead of playing the victim card, Muslims in the West should be thankful they are living in civilized societies under the rule of law-not sharia. It is also time for some self reflection and deep examination into what they have been taught to believe about non-Muslims.
Bottom line: It is Canadians who were the victims last week.
