President Barack Obama is continuing to meet with advisers on the spread of Ebola in the United States and will call members of Congress on Thursday to ask for their help.
The president will reach out to members of Congress later Thursday because there is a “role” that lawmakers can play, said White House press secretary Josh Earnest. He did not elaborate on specific requests that the president might make, but he acknowledged that lawmakers would have to be involved in the response if more money needs to be allotted to it.
“Congress obviously controls the purse strings,” Earnest said.
It’s also important to keep members of Congress informed and make sure they are “aware of the strategy that we’re pursuing and that they’re on board” with the administration’s actions, Earnest said.
One idea that has gained some traction among members of Congress is to implement a travel ban blocking travel from West Africa to the United States, but Earnest said that is “not something that we’re considering.”
The administration’s rationale, Earnest said: “We want to keep those lines of transportation so that those individuals who seek to enter this country … are subjected to the heightened screening measures that the president put in place.”
The administration also wants travel to continue because “commercial transportation is critical to making sure that supplies and equipment can get to the region.”
Obama has directed members of his administration working on the Ebola response to take actions “to ensure that we’re doing all we can” to identify, isolate and treat Ebola cases, Earnest said.
