The second healthcare worker infected with Ebola in Dallas will be transferred to Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia Burwell announced Wednesday.
The move comes as federal health officials weigh new protocols for hospitals when caring for Ebola patients in the United States.
Emory University Hospital is one of the four U.S. hospitals specifically equipped to deal with the virus. The facility successfully treated two American missionaries who contracted Ebola in West Africa, Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol.
The decision to transfer the Ebola patient comes after criticism of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's oversight of the outbreak response in Dallas.
Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital, which employs both infected healthcare workers, has failed multiple times to stop the spread of the virus. The second patient, who has not been identified, is ill but clinically stable, officials said.
