Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson on Friday announced panelists for an independent review of the scandal-plagued U.S. Secret Service, which will look into White House compound security and give recommendations for a new Secret Service director.
Serving on the panel will be Tom Perrelli, former associate attorney general; Mark Filip, former deputy attorney general; Danielle Gray, former Cabinet secretary and assistant to President Barack Obama; and Joseph Hagin, former deputy chief of staff for operations in the White House.
This follows Johnson’s Oct. 1 announcement that Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas along with the agency’s general counsel would assume control over an ongoing probe by the Secret Service into the Sept. 19 incident in which a man climbed over the fence and entered the White House. Subsequent reporting revealed the man actually was not stopped at the doors at the North Portico but reached as far as the East Room. Their findings were requested to be submitted by Nov. 1.
The panel will also submit findings and recommendations regarding security of the White House compound as well recommendations for a new U.S. Secret Service director by Dec. 15, Johnson said in a statement. Former Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned earlier this month.
“I am also requesting that the panel advise me about whether it believes, given the series of recent events, there should be a review of broader issues concerning the Secret Service,” Johnson said.
