Somali Muslims in US Demand Halal Welfare from Americans

Somali settlers. They’re just the gift that keeps on giving. Or maybe we’re their gift that keeps on giving.
Muslims in Minnesota facing poverty and tapping local food banks say they need a program that recognizes their pork-free needs.
Somali-Americans in one Minneapolis community have called for local government officials to create a no-pork zone via a special food shelf just for foods that conform to their faith, a local CBS News affiliate reported.
“It’s about human rights also — basic human rights to get the proper food and also healthy food,” Imam Hassan Mohamud told the affiliate.
“Some food shelves are trying to meet the need, but some of them already got canned beans that have already been mixed with pork — and there is a literacy issue here,” Mr. Weli said, CBS reported.
So Americans need to cater to illiterate unemployed Muslims on welfare. Human rights doesn’t mean having the government give you pork-free products. It means not being forced to eat pork products.
But considering how much we get from Somali Muslim settlers, how can we object to giving them more?
The sheriff of Hennepin County, Minn., told the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security on Wednesday about the threat of Somali gangs in his jurisdiction.
Stanek said Minnesota is a “designated U.S. Refugee Resettlement Area,” with a Somali population ranging from 80,000 to 125,000 in the state. As a result, Stanek said, while the African population in the U.S. as a whole is about four percent, 18 percent of the Minnesota population is African because of the large Somali presence.
Stanek listed five “typical crimes” committed by Somali gang members, including credit card fraud, cell phone and gun store burglaries, and witness intimidation. The fifth type of criminal activity is tied to international terrorism, Stanek said.
But wait… there’s more.
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) confirmed measles in a Hennepin County resident aged 9 months. The patients included children aged 4 months–4 years and one adult aged 51 years; seven of the 13 were of Somali decent. Eight patients were hospitalized.
The investigation determined that the index patient was a U.S.-born child of Somali descent, aged 30 months, who developed a rash February 15, 14 days after returning from a trip to Kenya.

I work with Somali families in the Minnesota Family Investment Program and have Somali colleagues. They point to another possible cause for the high level of autism diagnoses in their community and don’t necessarily believe that these diagnoses are correct. Many Somali families who receive child care assistance from the state choose family and friends as their child care providers instead of utilizing school readiness programs in licensed facilities. This results in Somali children being developmentally behind other children of their age when they begin school. They don’t know English and have not participated in developmentally appropriate activities, so naturally, they are already very behind their classmates, and many end up in special education classes. I’m sad to say there is another side to this issue – Somali families are seeking autism diagnoses for their children because of the Social Security benefits they result in. These benefits are desirable because they are more lucrative than welfare grants for these children. Of course, we must not generalize this to all Somalis, but it is becoming an increasing problem in this community.
And that’s all just in Hennepin County. The Welfare Jihad marches on.
