Chuck Todd: Midterms are ‘Starbucks Nation’ Versus ‘Chick-Fil-A Country’
by Evan McMurry | 12:00 pm, September 21st, 2014

On Meet the Press Sunday morn, host Chuck Todd found a new way to say the exact same thing political pundits have been saying daily for the past year: the 2014 midterms structurally favor Republicans thanks to the Senate seats at play.

Or in Todd’s new red-state-blue-stateish formulation, it’s Starbucks Nation vs. Chick-Fil-A country.

The chain-based heuristic refers to urban areas that vote Democratic versus ex-urban and rural areas that vote Republican. In 2012 the battleground states favored urban, Starbucks-pocked areas, hence Obama’s win; in the upcoming election, the toss-up states are more rural, hence the GOP’s confidence.

As Todd put it, “It could be advantage to the chicken,” which I have a feeling is a sentence that will come back to haunt him.
