N.Y. Dems press for citizen rights for illegals; ‘it’s unconscionable,’ GOPer says

By Cheryl K. Chumley - The Washington Times - Monday, September 15, 2014

Illegal immigrants can score big in New York, where Democrats are pushing a bill — aptly dubbed “New York is Home” — that would grant driver’s licenses and voting rights, and even the ability to seek public office, to those in the country unlawfully.

The amnesty measure, if passed, would give nearly 3 million people near-legal status, the New York Post reported. The bill would also prevent police from giving out any information to the federal government about the illegals, unless they’re subjected to a warrant for a crime that’s not related to their citizenship status, the newspaper reported.

The bill also would allow the illegals to apply for professional business licenses and serve as jurors. the New York Post reported.

Democrats are banking on winning the Senate to pass the bill.

“[It’ll pass] if we have a stable Democratic majority in the Senate,” said Sen. Gustavo Rivera, one of the bill’s sponsors, in the New York Post. “It’s something I believe in. It’s something the state can do and should do.”

Meanwhile, Republicans are planning to use the bill as a rally call to vote GOP.

“This bill could pass if the Democrats are in charge of the Senate,” Republican Sen. Marty Golden said. “They’re out of their minds.”

And another GOPer, Conservative Party chairman Mike Long, said in the New York Post: “This is absolute amnesty. It disregards the laws of the United States. It’s unconscionable.”
