A second suspect is in custody, facing one count of aggravated assault, in the vicious beating of a retired Marine in the parking lot of a West Point, Mississippi restaurant.

Police say that Marquavious McMillian, 20, has been charged for his alleged role in a fight that took place in the Huddle House parking lot a little more than a week ago. Thirty-two year-old Ralph Weems was severely injured and reportedly remains hospitalized in a coma after brain surgery.

The incident has drawn national attention as a possible hate crime — the victim, Weems, is white; the two suspected assailants are black — and there are apparently indications that the attack could have been as “revenge” for the police shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.

According to the newspaper The Dispatch:

Courtez McMillian, 22, was arrested Monday and also charged with one count of aggravated assault. Police are not saying if the alleged offenders are related.

Both men received a $250,000 bond. Authorities declined to comment on whether the men were related.

The investigation is ongoing. Witnesses are still being interviewed, according to [Police Chief] Brinkley.

The case will be presented to the grand jury in October. Brinkley said the grand jury will decide if the case should be elevated to a hate crime.
