Mr. M and I just visited Gettysburg and learned that the other speaker on Nov. 19, 1863, noted orator Edward Everett, asked that very same question in the two-hour-long speech that preceded Lincoln's more famous comments. I didn't have time to read the entire speech carefully, needless to say.
