New York Lawyers Want $208 Million for Public Defenders for Illegal Aliens

First the taxpayers pay for the public defenders who will keep the illegal aliens from being deported. Then they’ll pay for the illegal aliens. Then they’ll pay for their public defenders on their next appearance in court on drunk driving, rape or burglary charges.
What’s not to like about that?
Every year, tens of thousands of people appear in immigration court to fight deportation orders without a lawyer to assist them. Many are poor and adrift, unable to speak English or understand the laws determining their fate.
Were indigent immigrants to face prosecution in the nation’s federal criminal courts, they would have the right to a lawyer at the government’s expense. But nothing in the law provides such a benefit in immigration court.
For years, immigration lawyers and other supporters have pressed to change this. On Friday, the New York City Bar Association plans to release a study contending that cost should not be an obstacle to the creation of a public defender system, paid for by the federal government, for indigent immigrants facing deportation.
Do liberals believe that cost should be an obstacle to anything except middle class tax cuts and providing veterans with health care?
It estimates that a system that provided legal counsel for every poor immigrant facing deportation would cost about $208 million per year.
$208 million? Why that’s nothing. That’s an Obama vacation.
The study argues that if all poor immigrants facing deportation were provided with legal counsel, the savings would be huge and immediate.
To the lawyers representing them it certainly would be. But look for this to be the next bid. It’s perfect liberalism. It creates a sinecure for liberal lawyers and makes it hard to deport illegal Democratic Party voters.
